Low-thickness grip effect floor: Skygrip Isoplam for outdoor use

A technical guide on Skygrip Isoplam: non-slip performance, aesthetic continuity and design solutions for pool edges, terraces and pedestrian paths.

Beyond renewal: when security and continuity meet exterior design

In contemporary outdoor spaces, safety is an increasingly important design consideration. Gardens, terraces, courtyards, pedestrian walkways and pool surrounds need to provide grip, durability and resistance to weathering without compromising the aesthetic quality of the project.

Existing floors, when deteriorated or no longer suitable for their intended use, can become slippery, difficult to maintain and visually inconsistent. For this reason, low-thickness anti-slip flooring provides an effective solution for architects, designers and end clients.

Skygrip is the Isoplam system designed to create continuous, tactile flooring with a high aesthetic value. At just 2–3 mm thick, it can also be applied over suitably prepared existing surfaces, helping to reduce demolition work and installation times while maintaining a clean, contemporary architectural aesthetic with no visual interruptions.

How the Skygrip low-thickness system works

Skygrip is based on a formulation developed to create a power-trowelled effect with a highly tactile appearance. Applied over ceramic, tiles, marble, concrete, sand-cement screeds or self-levelling screeds, it creates a continuous, anti-slip surface suitable for areas exposed to rain or frequent contact with water.

The final result depends on the balance between substrate preparation, primer application, material application, mechanical finishing and final protection. The range of available colours makes it possible to customise surfaces in terms of colour, texture and overall visual appearance. The finish enhances the tactile character of the floor and contributes to the long-term stability of the surface.

The main advantages of the system include:

  • Low thickness and application over existing surfaces, allowing floors to be renovated while minimising changes in floor level and reducing the need for demolition.
  • Resistance to wear and weathering, with performance suitable for areas exposed to frequent foot traffic, frost and abrasion.
  • Continuous, anti-slip surface, ideal for wet areas such as pool surrounds, ramps and pedestrian walkways.

How to apply Skygrip

The application of Skygrip follows a precise technical sequence designed to ensure adhesion, continuity and surface resistance:

1. Substrate preparation: preliminary grinding of concrete, screed, self-levelling substrates or tiles.

2. Primer application: application of Skyprimer, followed by a broadcast of quartz aggregate.

3. First coat: even application of Skygrip using a trowel or squeegee.

4. Textured finish: application of a second coat, followed by power-trowelling, sanding and cleaning.

5. Final protection: application of a suitable protective treatment after curing.

Fields of application: from the poolside to pedestrian and driveways

Thanks to its combination of grip, aesthetic continuity and customisable texture, Skygrip is suitable for a wide range of outdoor applications.

One of its most relevant applications is anti-slip flooring for pool surrounds. In these areas, frequent exposure to water requires a safe, uniform surface while maintaining a clean and continuous aesthetic around the pool.

The system is also suitable for the renovation of pathways, pavements, terraces, patios and ramps. In residential settings, it creates continuous, durable and visually clean outdoor surfaces without removing the existing flooring, provided that the substrate is suitable.

Skygrip can also be used in high-end public and contract environments, including squares, car parks, pedestrian areas and the outdoor spaces of hospitality facilities, where the flooring becomes an integral part of the architectural language.

Installation and maintenance criteria for a durable surface

Like any continuous flooring system, Skygrip requires careful design of the complete build-up. Performance depends not only on the final layer, but also on proper substrate preparation. The substrate must be stable, suitable for the intended use and correctly ground before application.

Maintenance is straightforward but important: periodic cleaning with detergents compatible with the protective treatment helps remove dust and residues that may accumulate on the surface, preserving its appearance and performance over time.

Choosing Skygrip by Isoplam means relying on a solution in which product, application technique and installation work together as an integrated system. Skygrip transforms existing outdoor floors into continuous, safe and customisable surfaces, combining fast renovation, durability and aesthetic quality.

Isoplam goes beyond supplying materials: it supports architects and designers from the selection of the appropriate application system through to on-site installation. Installation is carried out by specialised teams and a network of authorised applicators trained at Isoplam’s facilities, helping to ensure control over the entire process and a final result consistent with the specified technical and aesthetic performance.
