Inside the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence, an important industrial complex of rationalism recently regenerated, is Hiroko, a Japanese take-away designed by ACQ Studio
Located within the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence, Hiroko is a Japanese takeaway designed by ACQ Studio as a distinct architectural intervention within the existing industrial space.
The interior offers a contemporary interpretation of the essential character of Japanese tradition, creating an intimate environment where bistro, bookshop and wine shop coexist within a structure organised around a modular grid. Referencing the graphic language of kanji calligraphy, the grid establishes a dialogue with the site’s industrial heritage.
The flooring features a clouded concrete finish, selected to create a seamless surface that visually unifies the different spaces and accompanies visitors throughout the interior.
The absence of joints and the subtle tonal variations of the finish create a soft, tactile effect that enhances the perception of natural light and contributes to a restrained, balanced atmosphere consistent with the studio’s architectural language.
The clouded texture introduces a subtle visual variation that interacts with the timber furnishings, the metal structure of the open kitchen and the translucent surfaces used throughout the project.
Beyond its aesthetic qualities, the flooring provides a durable, easy-to-maintain surface for a hospitality environment, combining material continuity with the technical performance required for a space subject to high foot traffic and intensive daily use.
